The USA is behind the explosions at the gas pipelines Nord Stream 1 and 2 last autumn.

That's what award-winning journalist Seymour Hersh claims.

The information is rejected by the White House, which calls it "complete fiction".

The investigative and Pulitzer-winning American journalist Seymour Hersh has conducted an investigation published on his blog in which the United States is singled out as being behind the explosions at Nord Stream last fall.

According to Hersh, American military divers must have planted explosives on the gas lines, writes the British Daily mail.

Reuters and the newspaper The Times have also reported on the claims. The White House responded on Wednesday to the information, calling it "completely false and complete fiction".

Russia's Foreign Ministry said Wednesday that the United States needs to answer for its involvement in the explosions, following the Hersh report.

Russia has previously accused the West of being behind the explosions at Nord Stream 1 and 2 last year - but without pointing to any concrete evidence.

It was at the end of September last year that leaks were discovered on the gas lines. Investigators from Sweden and Denmark have previously said that the explosions were a consequence of sabotage, but have not identified anyone responsible.

Facts

The explosions at Nord Stream: The gas leaks in the Baltic Sea

On the night of September 26, a large leak was discovered from the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline that runs from Russia to Germany through the Baltic Sea.

On September 27, another leak was discovered – from Nord Stream 1.

The next day, another one was discovered.

A total of four leaks were recorded on the lines. Two of them in the Swedish economic zone northeast of Bornholm and two in the Danish economic zone, southeast of Bornholm.

Both Swedish and Danish seismic measurements show that explosions took place in the sea a few hours before the respective leak was discovered.

Authorities and assessors in several countries early on leaned towards the fact that these were deliberate attacks.

On November 18, Swedish prosecutors confirmed that the lines had been subjected to serious sabotage.
