The budget crisis in the US

The left calls the proposal a compromise – the right terror

Friday night's Senate vote on a new budget proposal, which would finance the government for another year, can be seen as the first visible progress since the US budget crisis became a fact over a month ago. This is what Roll Call writes.

The proposal was presented by the Democrats after several weeks of negotiations. Minority leader Chuck Schumer described the new package as reasonable and a compromise.

Many Republicans saw it differently, however, writes the Washington Post. A White House spokesman agreed that the proposal was "a major retreat from their original position", but others took out big saws. The new proposal is "political terrorism", thought Senator Lindsey Graham, and after a meeting behind closed doors, Republicans voted no.

The parties disagree on several important parts of the budget. Talks to end the government shutdown continue on Saturday, but there are no new votes planned.

Republicans Reject Democrats' Proposal

Republicans on Friday rejected Democrats' proposal to end the ongoing shutdown in the US, according to Bloomberg.

- No, we're not going to do that. We've said the government should be opened, says Republican Senator Steve Daines from Montana in an interview with Fox News.
