Donald Trump's attack on Somalis: "Garbage"
- I don't want them in our country.
US President Donald Trump launches a fierce attack on Somalis in the US - especially Democratic congressman Ilhan Omar.
In her home state of Minnesota, anger is simmering over the jump.
"It's scary that he is so obsessed with me. I hope he gets the help he so desperately needs," writes Ilhan Omar on social media.
The post was made shortly after Trump received a question at a cabinet meeting about a fraud case, in which Somalis are suspected, in Omar's home state of Minnesota. His response came to be marked by xenophobia, according to information in several media.
At the crossroads
- They do not contribute anything. I don't want them in our country, the president said of the state's large Somali population, according to The Washington Post, adding that "there's a reason their country is not good, their country stinks."
Trump further claimed that the United States is at a crossroads and that things will go badly if "we continue to receive garbage".
- Ilhan Omar is a broom. . . Her friends are trash.
Omar, who was elected to the House of Representatives in 2018, fled the war in his homeland and came to the United States as a teenager. She became a citizen of the United States 25 years ago.
Un-American?
Trump's move comes as his administration is reportedly conducting raids against undocumented Somalis in the twin cities of Minneapolis-Saint Paul. The president has accused, without evidence, Somali gangs of "terrorizing" people in Minnesota.
Saint Paul Mayor Melvin Carter dismisses Trump's attack.
- This idea that we take an entire country, declare an entire people guilty of crimes committed by a few individuals is stunningly un-American, he tells CNN.
Donald Trump has been criticized for racist rhetoric, both now and during his first term. Then he called, among other things, a number of African countries "shitholes".
