Flávio Bolsonaro says that his father, Brazil's jailed ex-president Jair Bolsonaro, has appointed him as his heir in politics.
In practice, this means that Flávio Bolsonaro, a 44-year-old senator, is open to running in the next presidential election.
Right-wing radical Jair Bolsonaro was recently sentenced to 27 years in prison for trying to stage a coup after losing the 2022 election.
"It is with a great sense of responsibility that I confirm Jair Messias Bolsonaro's decision to entrust me with the mission of continuing our national project," the son writes on X.
The presidential election will be held in October next year. If he runs, Flávio Bolsonaro will face a number of conservative candidates as well as the incumbent leftist president, 80-year-old Lula da Silva, who has signaled that he intends to seek another term.
70-year-old Jair Bolsonaro was president from 2019 to 2023.
