German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is sharply criticizing the new US national security strategy.

Merz calls parts of the new Trump strategy “unacceptable”.

– I see no need for the Americans to now want to save democracy in Europe, says Merz according to the AFP news agency.

The security strategy, which was published on the White House website on Friday, among other things, warns the US against following the same path as Europe, which according to the document risks “the extinction of civilization”. The EU is accused of “undermining political freedom and sovereignty”, and immigration, low birth rates and alleged threats to freedom of expression in Europe are pointed out as threats to the continent.

Statements that the US should “cultivate resistance” in European countries have prompted a fierce reaction from several European politicians.

In an interview with Politico published on Tuesday, Trump launched a new attack, calling Europe a group of countries “in decline” led by “weak” leaders.
