Kaja Kallas: The USA remains our most important ally
The USA remains Europe's most important ally. This is what EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on Saturday, the day after the US published its new global strategy – a document that has drawn clear criticism from Europe.
Kallas admits that there was a lot of criticism, but adds that some parts are also "true".
- I think we have not always agreed on different issues, but the overall principle still applies. We are the greatest allies and we should stick together, she says.
Analysis: Trump has exposed his contempt for Europe
The White House's new national security strategy exposes Donald Trump's contempt for Europe, when a picture of the continent is painted that at best lacks any basis in reality and at worst has its roots in far-right movements. This is what CNN's Nick Paton Walsh writes in an analysis.
He writes that Europe is described as an undemocratic place where the population is actively being replaced by “non-European” – i.e. non-white – inhabitants and that the continent will be “unrecognizable” within a couple of decades.
“The remedy is proposed to ‘cultivate resistance to current developments within European countries’ – a clear hint of overt interference,” he continues.
The Independent’s Sam Kiley calls their description of reality “utter madness” and points out that there is no reliable population analysis that shows that any European country will ever have a majority of “non-European” inhabitants. He also finds no support for the claims that Europe’s democracies are under threat.
Instead, he points to the erosion of American democracy under Trump.
“As long as it persists and Trump simultaneously writes outright lies into national politics, the US can no longer be considered an ally – or even a reluctant partner.”
