Queen Margrethe of Denmark has been hospitalized with angina, the court announced on its website.
The queen will be hospitalized over the weekend for observation and is in good spirits, it says.
The 86-year-old Queen Margrethe formally has the role of head of state, after she surprised the world in her New Year's speech in 2023 by announcing that she would abdicate and hand over the throne to her son Frederik. This happened a few weeks later.
Queen Margrethe was born at Amalienborg Palace on 16 April 1940. Her parents were King Frederik and Queen Ingrid, who came from Sweden. The Queen is thus a cousin of Sweden's King Carl Gustaf.
In 1967, she married the French Count Henri de Laborde de Monpezat, who then became Prince Henrik. He died in 2018. The couple have two sons: King Frederik, married to Queen Mary, and Prince Joachim, married to Princess Marie.
Queen Margrethe is known as a royal who cares about traditions, while always going her own way. She draws, paints and sews and has participated in many exhibitions and created scenography for ballet performances.
