Altman hits back: Musk made hair-raising proposals
Sam Altman hit back at Elon Musk's accusations of exploiting Open AI's non-profit structure for his own gain when he testified in court on Tuesday, Bloomberg reports.
The Open AI boss says he became "extremely uncomfortable" when Musk demanded full control of a planned for-profit subsidiary in 2017. Altman describes it as "particularly hair-raising" when Musk, when asked what would happen if he died, replied that control could pass to his children.
- I didn't feel comfortable with that, Altman said in court.
The testimony came in the final stages of the trial, where Musk accuses OpenAI of abandoning its non-profit mission to make money together with Microsoft.
Elon Musk vs. Open AI – the question is this
- Elon Musk has sued Open AI CEO Sam Altman over the company's transformation from non-profit to for-profit.
- Open AI was founded in 2015 as a non-profit organization, but created a commercial structure in 2019 to raise capital.
- Musk, who invested over $44 million in Open AI early on, says the change violates the company's original purpose.
- He demands that profits be returned to the non-profit part of Open AI and that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman leave the management.
- Open AI believes that the lawsuit is mainly about weakening the competitor in favor of Musk's own AI company X AI.
