Han kritiserade monarkin – döms till 50 års fängelse
He criticized the monarchy - sentenced to 50 years in prison
A 30-year-old man in Thailand has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for insulting the monarchy. According to CNN, Mongkhon Thirakot's sentence is the harshest ever handed down under the country's strict majesty laws.
Mongkhon, a political activist from the northern Chiang Rai province, was sentenced last year to 28 years in prison. A higher court now further strengthens the punishment.
The convicted man was arrested in 2021 for 27 posts he made on Facebook during the same year. It is unclear what his post was about.

Exposed situation for activists – two cases in the same week
Prominent Thai democracy activist Arnon Nampa has been sentenced to an additional four years in prison for a series of old Facebook posts allegedly insulting the royal family.
Arnon, a 39-year-old human rights lawyer, is already serving a four-year prison sentence for violating the country's strict majesty laws.
He was one of the leaders of the democracy protests in Bangkok in 2020, where activists demanded reforms of the monarchy.
The verdict against Arnon came on Wednesday. Just a few days later, a court sentenced another political activist to 50 years in prison for breaking the royal laws, a record sentence. Over 150 activists have been convicted under the country's majesty laws, which are considered extreme by international human rights groups.
