Sunak fires party leader after tax irregularities

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak sacks Nadhim Zahawi, leader of the Conservative Party and former finance minister, after an investigation into his taxes revealed irregularities, writes Reuters.

According to observers, the results of the investigation risk casting a shadow over the prime minister's own judgment and integrity, writes AFP.

Zahawi claims that it is carelessness on his part, and not a deliberate avoidance of tax.

Climate threatGlobal challenges Former UN chief wants to see more action - less visions

Climate talks to be held in the United Arab Emirates later this year should focus on action rather than visions, former UN chief Ban Ki-moon told AFP.

- Many countries and many people have already presented the visions, so we don't need any more. We need a COP meeting with solutions and measures, he says.

The latest climate summit COP27, which was held in Egypt in November, resulted, among other things, in a climate damage fund where it was agreed that richer countries should allocate money to developing countries for damages caused by climate change.

Neither electricity nor water - still the villagers return home

There is no electricity and no water, but despite this, a majority of the nearly 1,000 residents of the village of Kalynivske, in the Kherson region, choose to stay and live on emergency aid from organizations. This is written by AP, which visited the village.

The remote village is not far from the front line yet residents have started to return.

- When you go out into the streets nowadays, you see happy people walking around, says Tatiana Trofimenko, who describes how there used to be no one outside.

Cancer-stricken 83-year-old Gennady Shaposhnikov lies on a couch in his partially destroyed house. He depends on aid workers to look after him and deliver food.

 - Come back soon, he says to aid workers as they leave.

Ukrainians are trained in demining in Cambodia

A group of 15 Ukrainian deminers has received training in the dangerous job in Cambodia, TT writes. Cambodia, which endured three decades of war until 1998, is one of the countries in the world where landmines are most widespread.

Stanislav Kulykjuskyj is happy and grateful for the training. The biggest challenge is scale, he explains. Until all mines are cleared, people cannot be allowed to return to their villages and farms.

- This is a prerequisite for reconstruction, says Kulykjuskyj.

Since 2022, Ukraine has been on a list of countries in the world with the most landmines, according to the Landmine Monitor 2022 report.
