Reactions to the Trump indictment
Analysis: A dangerous new phase begins in the US - "tragedy that Trump's tactics work"
The indictment against former American president Donald Trump marks the starting point for "a bitter new phase" in American politics. That's what CNN's Stephen Collinson writes in an analysis.
According to him, it also represents a uniquely dangerous moment for the United States, because Trump will do everything to protect himself.
"The indictment [...] is likely to upend America's already poisoned politics, threaten to shake up another presidential election, and may represent the biggest test yet for the justice system," he writes.
The Guardian's David Smith is on the same track. He states that Trump has historically gaped higher the more serious the accusations against him have been and writes that the prosecution will probably create more chaos in America's already fraught political landscape.
Smith writes that Trump will "undoubtedly" turn his sights on prosecutor Alvin Bragg - and that he has already done so with "dehumanizing and racist language".
"The tragedy is that the tactic will work on many Republicans," he writes.
Reuters' Nathan Layne and Gram Slattery write that the indictment will anger many Trump supporters. But they also believe that many Republicans "who are tired of all the drama" may start looking for other presidential candidates.

Ivanka Trump: "Love my dad"
Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka makes her first statement after the news that he is being indicted.
"I love my father and I love my country. Today I feel for both," she writes on Instagram.
"I appreciate the voices across the political spectrum expressing support and concern".Biden silent after the indictment: "No legal analyst"
US President Joe Biden has not commented on the fact that his predecessor Donald Trump is being prosecuted, reports CNN. According to sources with access to the White House, there is no indication that the defensive posture will change.
- He is the president, not a legal analyst, says a source.
Biden has made a big deal out of trying to ease political tensions in the United States. The strategy will now be put to the test, according to CNN.
At the same time, the Democrats state that they are following the developments surrounding the indictment closely, above all in view of the possible unrest that could flare up.
