The war in Yemen
The UN is "begging" for money to disarm environmental bombs
The 47-year-old and 330-meter-long oil tanker FSO Safer has been lying rusting off the coast of Yemen since the outbreak of war in 2015. The ship is filled with 1.1 million barrels of crude oil and is described by the UN as a ticking environmental bomb, SvD writes.
The UN has drawn up a plan to avoid the potential environmental disaster and the effort will begin in April. But SEK 355 million is still missing to finish the project. Achim Steiner, head of the UN development programme, says that people are now "begging and pleading" to collect the money.
- This is a potential disaster for nature and for humanity, so it requires some bold commitments, he tells the newspaper.
