Climate Threat Global Challenges

Forecast: Millions of Homes in England Could Flood

More than six million homes in England are in areas at risk of flooding, and the number is expected to rise to eight million by 2050, according to models from the British government's Environment Agency, writes The Guardian.

This is primarily flooding as a result of heavy rainfall that makes today's drainage systems inadequate.

The number of homes in the worst-risk areas has increased by 88 percent. This means that the risk is one in 30 in a given year.

New record year worries scientists – may contradict theories

Experts agree that 2024 looks set to be the warmest year ever measured, but there are divided opinions on how this will happen and what it means for the future, writes Axios.

Among the explanations for the development are changes in cloud cover and a strong El Niño phenomenon. But since 2023 was also a record year, there is a possibility that global warming will accelerate and that the planet's climate will start to behave differently than expected.

This means that scientists' climate scenarios may be wrong, meaning that "higher temperature increases and greater societal consequences are likely to occur sooner," writes Axios.
