Trump Continues to Joke About Canada: "51st State"
Donald Trump, and several people close to him, have joked in recent weeks that Canada should become the 51st state of the United States. This is reported by AFP.
On Wednesday, the president-elect wrote on social media that many Canadians want the country to become part of the United States.
"They would save an incredible amount of money on taxes and military protection. I think it's a fantastic idea. 51st state!!!!"
Trump has previously used a joking tone when he suggested that the countries be merged. When he suggested it to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in November, it was met with laughter.
However, there seems to be at least a hint of seriousness in Trump's joke. According to Fox News, Trump said that it would solve problems related to illegal immigration and put an end to the fentanyl market.
Bird Flu Alert
First case of severe bird flu in the US
The first serious case of bird flu in a human in the US has been detected in the state of Louisiana, the country's infectious disease control agency said, according to Reuters.
61 people have fallen ill in the latest epidemic of the disease, but all have had less severe symptoms. The case in Louisiana is the first in which a person has suffered serious symptoms.
On Wednesday, California declared a state of emergency due to the virus. The majority of the US's milk comes from the state and bird flu is widespread. About 60 percent of the state's entire cow herd has been found to be carrying the infection.

Fed vs. inflation
Interest rate announcement lowers Wall Street: “No Christmas cheer”
Wall Street had its worst trading day of the fall after the Federal Reserve cut interest rates as expected and flagged fewer cuts in 2025. At the close, all indexes were in the red.
• S&P500: −3.0%
• Nasdaq: −3.6%
• Dow Jones: −2.6%
– There was no Christmas cheer from the Fed. The members predict higher inflation and lower unemployment in 2024. There is no reason to be dovish about those prospects, says Tradestation strategist David Russell to CNBC.
Bloomberg's mag-7 index fell over 4 percent. The US ten-year rose over 2.5 percent to 4.50 percent while the dollar reached its highest level since 2022.
The Russell2000 small-cap index was punished the hardest by the US stock markets with a decline of 4.9 percent. At the bottom of a blood-red Nasdaq were Tesla and Broadcom, which fell 8 and 7.5 percent respectively.
Nvidia showed resilience after Wednesday's positive analyses. The stock rose just over 1 percent.
With the Dow Jones turning down, the index summed up its tenth consecutive day of losses. It is the longest losing streak since 1974, writes CNBC.
