The leader of the ruling party resigns and apologizes

The party leader of South Korea's ruling party, Han Dong-Hoon, is resigning after the president was impeached this weekend.

During the press conference, he describes President Yoon Suk Yeol's actions as a "betrayal" against the country, writes The Guardian. Han Dong-Hoon used to be one of Yoon's closest allies, and it is his party that has appointed him.

- I tried in every possible way to find a better way for this country than impeachment, but I did not succeed. It is entirely due to my shortcomings. I apologize.

The impeachment trial against Yoon could take several months.

The Middle East crisis  The Gaza war
45,000 are said to have been killed in Gaza since the start of the war

Over 45 000 people in Gaza have now been killed since the war between Israel and Hamas began on October 7 last year. This is stated by the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health according to international news agencies. No previous war in Gaza has caused so many deaths.

The total death toll is stated to be 45 028 people. 52 of them are said to have been killed in the last 24 hours. The figures from the Ministry of Health are difficult to verify, but the UN and other international bodies have previously regarded the statistics as reliable.

The death toll also makes no distinction between civilians and Hamas terrorists, but a UN report in November determined that nearly 70 percent of those killed were women and children.
