Meta's future

140 suffer from PTSD from moderator jobs at Meta

For between eight and ten hours every day, at least 140 of Facebook's content moderators in Kenya were forced to watch material that contained necrophilia, time-lapse and self-harm, writes The Guardian.

Now the employees are suing the owner company Meta and the Kenyan outsourcing company. In the application, the 140 people testify that they suffered from severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

According to the lawsuit, the content was so horrific that many fainted, vomited and had to run from their desks. 40 of the employees began abusing drugs and alcohol to cope with their jobs and some employees' relationships were destroyed.

Meta has broken off with the Kenyan company. None of them wants to comment on the case.

The giants' outsourcing criticized: "Dangerous work"

The fact that 140 people in Kenya have suffered severe PTSD after working as content moderators for Facebook points to a problem with the social media giants' outsourcing to developing countries. Martha Dark, who runs the organization Foxglove, which works with the downsides of technology in poorer countries, tells The Guardian.

- The evidence is undeniable: Moderating Facebook is a dangerous job that causes lifelong PTSD in almost everyone who does it, she says.

The 140 moderators have sued Facebook's parent company Meta. According to the lawsuit, several of them suffered from mental health problems and fell into addiction. Meta is reviewing its collaborations with outsourcing companies, but does not want to comment on the case.
