Milei forced to flee – stones thrown at car
Argentine President Javier Milei was forced to flee an angry crowd in Buenos Aires on Wednesday, Reuters reports.
Milei, who is campaigning ahead of local and mid-term elections, stood on the platform with his sister and chief of staff Karina and some bodyguards.
Parts of the crowd began throwing objects at the vehicle, including at least one stone, and shouted messages such as “stick, Milei”. Fights also broke out in the crowd. The car quickly drove away, and no one was reportedly injured.
Milei and his sister are currently embroiled in a corruption scandal involving bribes at the disability agency.
Bribery scandal in Argentina – Milei’s sister took money
In recent weeks, Argentine media has been dominated by a corruption scandal, The Guardian reports.
In leaked audio recordings, Diego Spagnuolo, head of the country’s disability agency, is heard discussing bribes related to contracts for the purchase of medicines.
Spagnuolo is heard saying that Karina Milei, sister and chief of staff to President Javier Milei, pocketed three percent of the money for the contracts. After initially denying it, Spagnuolo admitted that he was the one being overheard, after which he was fired.
“It’s the biggest scandal this administration has ever faced,” says political analyst Juan Corel.
