New York mayoral election

Trump threatens to withdraw funds if Mamdani wins

US President Donald Trump may withdraw state financial support to New York if socialist Zohran Mamdani wins the mayoral election. He said so on CBS's "60 minutes".

- It will be difficult for me as president to send a lot of money to New York. Because if New York is led by a communist, they just waste everything you send, Trump said.

He also took the opportunity to give Mamdani a boot that had nothing to do with politics. When the host pointed out that Mamdani had been called a left-wing version of Trump himself, the response was:

- I look a lot better than him, don't I?

The European left looks at Mamdani: "Concrete vision"

Socialist Zohran Mamdani is heading for a landslide victory in the mayoral election in New York. Now Politico reports that several European left-wing politicians have been in contact with Mamdani's campaign staff to be inspired.

Liza Pflaum, chief of staff for the German left-wing party Linke, one of the leaders, Jan van Aken, says that they will use a campaign similar to Mamdani's in the local elections in Berlin next year. There will be hard grassroots work and a focus on the cost of living.

- He offers a concrete vision for how people's lives can actually be improved, says Pflaum.

Manon Aubry, one of the leaders of the left-wing group in the GUE/NGL in the European Parliament, says that Mamdani's successes show that it is possible to push through radical changes.

Analysis: An election of Mamdani is a mark against Trump

Zohran Mamdani's success in New York shows that it is possible to make a political career far out on the left even in Donald Trump's USA, writes Expressen's Mats Larsson in an analysis.

Socialist Mamdani is running on a promise to make life cheaper by, among other things, providing free childcare and childcare services, as well as freezing rents to be financed by higher taxes for the richest.

In the German newspaper Die Zeit, Leon Ginel writes that a win for Mamdani in Tuesday's mayoral election has the potential to change the entire United States.

"It would be a statement against current politics in general and against President Trump's neoliberal, authoritarian course," he writes.

Zohran Mamdani is particularly popular among young people, which is not least noticeable in his style of dress, notes Ashley Fetters Maloy in the Washington Post.

He always dresses in a suit and tie, but from cheap chains - this reflects his message, she writes:

"He is a typical New Yorker from the outskirts, who is worried about how expensive it has become to live in the city."
