Obama's attack on Trump: Has anything gotten better?
Updated 17.54 | Published 17.47
The clock is ticking towards the gubernatorial elections in the US.
This has prompted Barack Obama to step into the political heat – and attack Trump.
- It's as if every day is Halloween, says the ex-president during a campaign rally in Virginia.
Ahead of Tuesday's gubernatorial election, Barack Obama chose to step up on stage to support Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill.
The two Democrats are campaigning to become governors in the states of Virginia and New Jersey, respectively.
During his speech, Obama highlighted the two candidates. But he spent most of his time throwing one boot after another at the incumbent president and the Trump administration, NBC reports.
– Let's be honest – our country is in a dark place right now, the ex-president said.
“Tricks and treat”
On stage, Obama pointed out that he had already warned voters in 2024 not to vote for Trump a second time.
– I have to admit that it turned out worse than I even thought – but I warned you! I did. You can play the clips.
Despite that, the former president refrained from blaming the American people. Instead, he expressed understanding for their choice to vote “in a time of economic instability.”
“But has any of that gotten any better for you?” Obama asked the audience, The Guardian reports.
He continued:
“I mean, it’s like every day is Halloween – except it’s all trick-or-treating and no treats.”
Trump in Florida
Obama’s campaigning in Virginia and New Jersey contrasts with Trump’s absence from the American media.
Instead of hitting the campaign trail, he spent the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.
In Virginia and New Jersey, Democrats Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill are facing Republicans Winsome Earle-Sears and Jack Ciattarelli.
However, Trump has previously expressed support for Ciattarelli. According to NBC, he has also subtly shown support for Earle-Sears – but without ever mentioning her name.
Virginia was previously a clear Republican state. But after Obama's victory in 2008, the state voted for Democratic governors. In 2021, however, Republican Glenn Youngkin won.
New Jersey also has a tradition of voting blue. However, that changed in 2010 when Republican Chris Christie was appointed governor.
FACTS
Gubernatorial elections in the US
Each state in the US has its own governor.
The governor is usually elected for four years – but the rules can differ between different states.
A governor is the highest executive leader in the state.
As a governor, you have the right to initiate new laws at the state level. It is also common for a governor to become the commander-in-chief of his state's National Guard – with the right to appoint many high-ranking officials.
