Trump stands firm: "Russia and China are testing nuclear weapons"
Donald
Trump is adamant that the United States should start testing nuclear
weapons. He says this in an interview on the CBS program "60 minutes".
- I don't want us to be the only country that doesn't test, says Trump.
The
president recently announced that the tests will resume, but has not
since developed what he means. When he is asked on the program about the
fact that China and Russia are not conducting tests with actual nuclear
weapons, the answer is:
- Russia is testing nuclear weapons and China is testing them too. You just don't know about it.
Minister: The United States will not test nuclear weapons
US
Energy Secretary Chris Wright tells Fox News that Trump's plans to test
the country's nuclear weapons will not involve testing nuclear weapons.
- These are not nuclear explosions. That's what we call non-critical explosions, he says.
He
adds that the tests, which his agency will be responsible for, include
"all the other parts of a nuclear weapon to make sure they provide the
right geometry and prepare for the nuclear explosion."
The
comment is the first clarification from the White House since Donald
Trump announced on Thursday that he had ordered the Pentagon to resume
nuclear weapons tests, which he said should be done on the "same basis"
as other countries. Neither China nor Russia have tested nuclear weapons
since the 1990s.
