Trump-backed Asfura takes home the victory in Honduras
Conservative politician Nasry Asfura becomes the new president of Honduras. The 67-year-old has been crowned the winner after a hyper-even election and a vote count that has been ongoing for more than three weeks, writes AP.
Technical problems have disrupted the process and many votes have therefore been counted by hand, according to Reuters.
On Christmas Eve, it is announced that Asfura receives 40.3 percent of the vote, against the support of centrist politician Salvador Nasralla with 39.5 percent. The long vote count has been marred by conflicts and the result has been questioned even before the last vote has been counted. At the time of writing, Nasralla does not want to admit defeat.
Asfura, who is supported by US President Donald Trump, says he is ready to govern.
“I will not disappoint you,” he writes in a post on X.
Protests against the result: “A coup – worthless”
The leader of the Honduran Congress, Luis Redondo, is furious that conservative politician Nasry Asfura was declared the winner of the presidential election.
When the electoral commission presented the result, only two of three members were present. A coup, says the congressman, who wants the election to be annulled.
“It is worthless,” he writes on X.
Redondo represents Libre, a left-wing party that called for protests during the vote count against what they believe is an unfair process. They believe, among other things, that Donald Trump has engaged in election influence by supporting Asfura and saying that he does not intend to cooperate with any other candidate.
