Warmer in Boden than in Barcelona?

Yes, it actually looks like that.

– It is cold over western Europe right now, says meteorologist Lasse Rydqvist.

Anyone who was hoping for the Spanish sun over Christmas will probably be disappointed.

It is not sun and swimming or holiday weather over southwestern Europe, but instead quite chilly for the time of year.

– It is cold down over the Iberian Peninsula at the same time as it is really warm in the north. For example, it has been unusually warm in Svalbard, says Lasse Rydqvist, meteorologist at Klart.

This means that it will be around seven degrees in both Boden and Barcelona. Maybe even one degree warmer in Boden.

– Yes, it is likely to end up below seven degrees in northern Spain.

Mild air on Christmas Day

Otherwise, the Swedish Christmas and New Year's weather is upside down. The weather over the Christmas holiday is particularly difficult to assess, but mild air seems to dominate the country.

After a cold and crisp Christmas Eve morning, more clouds will pass over Norrland and be followed by milder air.

In the mountains, there will be both showers of snow and rain mixed with snow. In Götaland, you can expect varied cloudiness but a break. Otherwise, Christmas Eve will offer mostly clear and beautiful weather. The temperature will end up at -4 to +2 degrees.

Then on Christmas Day, unusually mild air will come in over northern Sweden.

- Starting tomorrow, on Christmas Eve, actually, but especially during Christmas Day, the mild air will make its way through more thoroughly, says Lasse Rydqvist.

They mean that it will be around seven degrees with variable cloudiness in the country and rain or sleet in the mountains.

Colder ahead of New Year's Eve

Later this week it will be colder in Sweden again.

- There will be northern winds and the sub-zero temperatures may return. Then we will see if there will also be any snow. It has been difficult to determine exactly how much snow may fall in the intervening days. It is a bit unclear whether it will only come as occasional snow showers or if it is a larger snowfall that stops.

According to the latest forecasts, it is leaning towards snow showers in the country's eastern countryside.

- We will simply have to wait and see how it turns out, says Lasse Rydqvist.
