Thailand: Ceasefire rushed for Trump

The broken ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia was rushed to be ready to be signed by US President Donald Trump when he visited the region in October, Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow said, according to AFP.

“I mean: the sooner the better, but sometimes we really need to sit down so that what we agree on really holds and is respected,” Phuangketkeow said.

The ceasefire signed in October was suspended the following month. Since then, at least 60 people have been killed in fighting between Thailand and Cambodia, and at least half a million people have been forced to flee.

Asian bloc holds crisis talks after new fighting

Southeast Asian foreign ministers gathered in Kuala Lumpur on Monday for crisis talks on the bloody border fighting between Thailand and Cambodia, AFP reports. At least 60 people have been killed and more than half a million have been forced to flee their homes in recent weeks.

The meeting in Malaysia aimed to revive a ceasefire previously negotiated by Asean under Malaysia's presidency and US President Donald Trump.

- Our goal is more far-reaching than turning down tensions. We must rebuild trust between the parties, said Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan during his opening speech.

Both Thailand and Cambodia accuse each other of violating the ceasefire. The conflict on the border goes back decades and has its origins in border demarcations during the colonial era.

Renewed border fighting — the point is this

• New fighting broke out between Thailand and Cambodia in early December 2025 after the ceasefire collapsed.
• Cambodia has closed all border crossings with Thailand and a curfew has been imposed in parts of Trat province in Thailand.
• The Swedish Foreign Ministry has expanded its travel advice to areas near the border.
• US President Donald Trump has declared a ceasefire, but the fighting continued and both countries accused each other of violating the ceasefire.
