UN: Military junta forces people to vote by force

The UN accuses Myanmar's military junta of forcing people to participate in the upcoming election, reports AFP.

- The military authorities in Myanmar must stop using brutal force to force people to vote, says UN human rights chief Volker Türk.

At the same time, the country's armed rebel movements call the election a sham process, and according to the BBC, they have instead tried to prevent people from participating. 

Trump fires at least 30 ambassadors: "Dangerous"

Donald Trump is ordering around thirty US ambassadors to leave their posts, reports Bloomberg. Several of the officials concerned are said to have received the order via telephone call without explanation.

According to ABC, this mainly applies to diplomats serving in Africa, but employees in Europe, Asia and Latin America are also affected. A spokesperson for the State Department describes the measure as a normal process.

The American Foreign Service Association, however, calls the decision “dangerous” and says it appears to be about the administration wanting to get rid of dissenters.

At least five dead when medical plane crashes in the US

At least five people have died after a plane belonging to the Mexican Navy crashed into the water off the US state of Texas, writes CNN. The plane was used for medical transport and on board were, among others, burn-damaged patients.

Witnesses to the accident describe it as foggy and visibility was “literally non-existent”.

Eight people were on board the plane, but two people were rescued and one person is still missing after the accident.
