Thai soldier killed – China calls for ceasefire
A Thai soldier was killed as fighting between Thailand and Cambodia continued on Monday, reports the Bangkok Post.
The countries have been exchanging rocket and artillery fire along the 817-kilometer border for three weeks.
Thailand and Cambodia are planning a meeting of defense officials on Wednesday to try to restore the ceasefire, an initiative welcomed by the Asian cooperation organization Asean.
In a separate statement, China is urging the countries to conclude a ceasefire immediately, and is offering to create the conditions for new talks.
Thailand's defense minister: Everyone else is on Cambodia's side
The outside world has taken Cambodia's side in the conflict with Thailand, Thai Defense Minister Natthaphon Nakpanich tells Thai PBS ahead of tomorrow's ceasefire talks.
“At this point, there is no country that is really on our side. Everyone talks as if they are neutral, but in reality they are behind Cambodia.”
At least 60 people have been killed in the conflict, which flared up again three weeks ago. Wednesday’s peace talks are being organized by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
