2025 - a terrible year for the royal houses

Queen Elizabeth called 1992 an annus horribilis. The terrible year. Several of her children's marriages collapsed, her favorite castle Windsor Castle burned down and the royal house was forced to start paying income tax.
It can rightly be said that 2025 was also an annus horriblis for several royal houses.
In Norway, the royal family has undergone several trials. Crown Princess Mette-Marit's son Marius Borg Høiby is charged with assault, rape and intimate partner violence, among other things. The trial starts in February, and if convicted, he will likely face several years in prison.
In Norway, the royal couplege has also hsd to deal with Princess Märtha Louise and her husband Durek Verrett, who are dedicated to selling out the royal family to the highest bidder.
In 2025, their Netflix documentary "Rebel Royals" premiered. It was largely based on the couple's wedding the previous year, an event that Märtha and Durek had Netflix and Hello magazine pay for.
Criticism was not long in coming, not least after Durek claimed in the film that his in-laws lacked understanding of racism.
In UK, the Epstein-scandal exploded again around former Prince Andrew. He publicly denounced Jeffrey Epstein, but both Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson secretly maintained contact with the billionaire.
Virginia Giuffre accused him of rape and took her own life earlier this year. Her memoirs, which were published posthumously, contained further information about Epstein and the prince.
Andrew was kicked out of the royal family and now goes by the name Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.
Other royal families have also had contact with Epstein. Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Princess Sofia have both met him. Mette-Marit has publicly distanced herself from Epstein and in Sofia's case, the court has emphasized that it was a few superficial meetings. Her former mentor, businesswoman Barbro Ehnbom, regularly sent pictures of Sofia and other mentees to Epstein and described them in unpleasant terms.
But not everything is dark. 2025 has also contained bright spots worth remembering.
Princess Ines was born, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel celebrated 15 years of marriage, and both King Charles and Princess Catherine were able to announce that they had tapered off their cancer treatments during the year.
Now we look forward to a new royal year – with 80th birthday celebrations and golden weddings – and the hope of significantly fewer scandals.
