Greenland's future

Trump: Only I limit my power – there could be a choice between NATO and Greenland

Trump is threatening to withdraw from NATO if he does not get Greenland. This is evident from a newly published part of the long interview he did with the New York Times.

When asked whether his top priority is getting Greenland or preserving NATO, he does not want to answer directly, but says:

- It could be a choice.

The president adds that the transatlantic alliance is "basically useless" without the US in the driver's seat.

Trump is also asked if there is a limit to his global power.

- Yes, there is one thing. My own morality. My own conscience. That is the only thing that can stop me.

He also says that he "does not need international law".

Vice President's advice to Europe: "Take Trump's words about Greenland seriously"

Europe should take Donald Trump's words about Greenland's security seriously, US Vice President JD Vance said during a press conference on Thursday, according to AFP.

In recent days, the Trump administration has repeated the message that "the United States needs Greenland" and that it does not rule out using military means to achieve its goal.

According to the vice president, Europe has not done enough to protect Greenland. If European leaders continue to ignore the issue, "the United States will do something about it," he added.

- I guess my advice to European leaders and everyone else would be to take the US president seriously.

Denmark and Greenland meet at the White House

Denmark's US ambassador Jesper Møller Sørensen and Greenland's head of mission in the US, Jacob Isbosethsen, are meeting at the White House. Danish media reports.

Both on Wednesday and Thursday, Møller Sørensen has been in Congress to speak to both senators and members of the House of Representatives, according to TV2.

It is unclear exactly which politicians he met and what came out of the talks.

Sources: Europe weighs four plans for Greenland

Europe is considering four different ways to save Greenland from Trump. This is according to Politico, which has spoken to a number of government officials, diplomats, experts and NATO officials.

The four options

  1. Try to meet Trump and find a compromise, such as greatly increasing defense investments and mineral extraction on the island.
  2. "Give Greenland tons of cash" - that is, step up EU investments significantly so that Greenlanders are not tempted to take a bribe from Trump.
  3. Take economic revenge on the US through the EU's never-before-used "trade bazooka". The EU exports €600 billion to the US annually, and has a market share of over 50 percent for a third of these goods.
  4. Send troops to the island – not in the hope of stopping an American invasion, but to make such an invasion more costly for the US and thus hopefully deter them.
