Climate Threat Global Challenges

The Netherlands Must Do More for Its Caribbean Island

The Netherlands must do more to protect the inhabitants of the island of Bonaire in the Caribbean, which belongs to the country, from the effects of climate change. This is what a court has ruled, according to the AP.

According to the ruling, the government has discriminated against the 20,000 inhabitants of the former colony by not taking measures to deal with climate change.

The ruling comes after eight inhabitants of the island, together with Greenpeace, pursued the case. The island has been hit hard by storms, rainfall and rising sea levels, the news agency writes.

Joy after the climate ruling: “Fantastic victory”

Greenpeace is pleased that according to a ruling, the Netherlands must now do more to protect the inhabitants of the Dutch island of Bonaire in the Caribbean from the consequences of the climate crisis, reports Reuters.

Legal expert Eefje de Kroon says the ruling is “a fantastic victory” for the people of Bonaire.

Resident Jackie Bernabela, who was in court when the verdict was announced, began to cry with joy.

“We are no longer second-class citizens. Now there is equality,” she said.
