France supports terrorist designation of the Revolutionary Guard

Updated 19.18 | Published 19.05

France supports the EU's terrorist listing of Iran's Revolutionary Guard, President Emmanuel Macron announced via his office.

The initiative to list the Revolutionary Guard, IRGC, on the terrorist list is being driven by Italy.

When the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was formed in Iran shortly after the Islamic Revolution in 1979, it was to protect the new religious state from possible coup attempts, especially from Iran's national army. It is also with the religious regime that loyalty lies, not with the Iranian people.

The Revolutionary Guard consists of ground forces, air force and navy, but also the notorious Basij militia and the Quds Force, which is responsible for operations abroad. The Revolutionary Guard also has its own intelligence agency.
