Protests against ICE

Chaotic in Minnesota after fatal shooting – agents claim self-defense

The US Department of Homeland Security, DHS, has published a statement about the man who was shot dead by agents from the United States Border Patrol in Minneapolis.

“An individual approached border guards with a 9mm semi-automatic pistol. Agents attempted to disarm the suspect, but met violent resistance,” the agency writes, continuing:

“Fearing for his own life and that of his colleagues, one of the agents fired shots in self-defense.”

According to the DHS, the man had two magazines and no identification on him.

Clips of the incident show several agents wrestling a man to the ground and shooting him multiple times.

There is chaos at the scene of the shooting, writes the Minnesota Star Tribune. Federal agents have repeatedly fired tear gas. Protesters are shouting slogans and setting garbage containers on fire. Several people have been arrested.

Man shot dead by federal agents in Minnesota

A 37-year-old man has been shot dead by federal agents in Minneapolis, the police chief said. The man is believed to have been an American citizen and resident of the city.

A clip from the incident shows several agents wrestling the man to the ground and then firing several shots as he lies on the ground. It is still unclear what prompted the incident, but the Department of Homeland Security has, according to the AP, distributed a picture of a gun that the man is alleged to have been carrying.

After the shooting, protesters and police clashed. The New York Times reports that federal agents have used stun grenades and tear gas against the protesters.

The shooting comes at a time when tensions between the city's residents and federal agents are high. Just over two weeks ago, activist and mother of three Renee Nicole Good was shot dead by immigration police ICE in the city.

In a post on X, Governor Tim Walz announced that he had been in contact with the White House after Saturday's shooting and asked them to remove the federal agents from the state.

"Minnesota has had enough. This is terrible," he wrote.

White House releases AI image of lawyer Levy Armstrong

The White House has published an image on X in connection with the arrest of lawyer Nekima Levy Armstrong after ICE protests at a church on Sunday. BBC Verify has reviewed the image, which has been shown to be manipulated with the help of AI.

The original image was published on X by Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security in the United States. There, Levy Armstrong appears to be unharmed.

Half an hour later, the same image was published on the White House account, but instead Levy Armstrong is seen crying profusely.

"The enforcement of law will continue. The memes will continue. Thank you for your attention to this issue," writes Kaelan Dorr, deputy communications director at the White House, in response to the image according to the BBC.

The post has received almost six million views on X.
