The coronavirus infection in China
Xi asks for patience - 2023 difficult to interpret after the u-turn
In his New Year's address, Chinese President Xi Jinping appealed to the people to be patient in the fight against covid-19, after the country changed its strategy in early December.
- We have now entered a new phase of handling covid-19 and tough challenges remain, he says in the speech.
Xi Jinping also mentioned the economy, which he says is showing resilience. Analysts expect GDP growth of 4.8 percent in the next year. Guotai Junan's chief economist Hao Zhou emphasizes that uncertainty is great and that the economy could grow even more.
- It is actually difficult for analysts to give a forecast given the great virus uncertainty of the last month, he says.

The change of power in Brazil Lula da Silva sworn in as Brazil's new president
Lula da Silva has been sworn in as Brazil's new president at a ceremony in the capital Brasilia, according to several media outlets.
The left-leaning 77-year-old, who begins his third term as president, thus takes over from right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro.
- Democracy was the big winner in this election, says Lula, and promises to "build the country, with the people". Tens of thousands of supporters gathered in the city to celebrate and witness the ceremony. Bolsonaro, who left Brazil for the United States on Friday, broke with the tradition of handing the presidential ribbon to the successor.
Lula won the presidential election in October by a very narrow margin – 50.9 percent of the vote to Bolsonaro's 49.1.
