The Speaker Chaos Analysis: Launch Another Candidate

The positional war in the Republican Party over who will be the speaker of the US House of Representatives continues. The top Republican candidate, Kevin McCarthy, so far does not have strong enough support even to be elected by his own people.

Before Wednesday's vote, ex-president Donald Trump went out and appealed to his party friends to correct the ranks, but that didn't help either.

The Swedish political commentators Karin Eriksson (DN) and Erik Bergin (SvD) now see different solutions to the situation that has arisen:

"In the American media, the party friends are speculating whether it is time to change strategy and launch another candidate," writes Karin Eriksson.

"After all, McCarthy is the person who seems to be able to gather the widest support, so it is likely that he will eventually be elected Speaker," writes Erik Bergin.

The House of Representatives still without a Speaker

The problems of electing a new Speaker of the US House of Representatives continue. Neither on Wednesday, after three more rounds of voting, did the Republican Party manage to agree on who it wants to lead the work of the political assembly.

Support for the favorite Kevin McCarthy from California even decreased compared to Tuesday's polls. And among the Republican members who wanted to see another candidate, there were demands that McCarthy should understand that he cannot be elected and therefore should step aside.

Still at the sixth vote, however, he stood by his candidacy, whereupon the positional war continued and no speaker could be elected. Voting is underway, but he is unable to get the 218 votes required to be elected.

There is no limit to how many rounds can be required before a Speaker is formally elected. In 1856 it took two months and 133 votes before the members could agree on a Speaker.
