The coup plotters promised an election in August - now it has been moved
Myanmar's military government extends the state of emergency in the country for six months. This means that the promised election in August is postponed, several media write.
When the junta seized power from Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021, it promised that an election would be held no later than August 2023. Now the board states that it does not have sufficient control to be able to arrange an election. Reuters describes it as "chaos" in Myanmar since the coup.
According to the organization Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, security forces have killed 3,857 people since the seizure of power.

The opposition not surprised: "Power-hungry generals"
There will be no election in Myanmar in August as promised. The ruling junta thus breaks the promise it made during the military coup in 2021.
Waited, thinks Nay Phone Latt, who is the spokesperson for the opposition umbrella group National unity government. The group considers itself the country's legitimate government. He states that the junta has not managed to put down all pro-democracy forces in the last two years.
- The generals are thirsty for power and don't want to lose it.
He promises that the "current revolutionary activities" will continue. Since the coup in 2021, Myanmar has been a country in "chaos" with both peaceful and violent protests, writes Reuters.

The 2024 US election
First debate approaching - life injection or death blow?
It is going slowly, to say the least, for Ron DeSantis in the fight to become the Republican candidate in the presidential election. But the Florida governor's supporters are now setting their sights on a date that could change everything: August 23. That's what NBC News writes.
That's when the first presidential debate takes place in Milwaukee.
- The debate is of crucial importance for DeSantis. He urgently needs to change the narrative and regain momentum, said Dan Eberhart, who has donated money to DeSanti's campaign.
Several interviewees describe it as a chance for DeSantis to present himself as a strong counter-candidate to Donald Trump. But if things go badly, it could instead be a final death blow for the slow-starting campaign.

DeSantis on the upswing: Big deficit in Florida
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was seen for a while as the main favorite to become the Republican candidate in next year's presidential election. But recently, DeSanti's campaign has suffered several heavy setbacks and he is now far behind in public opinion in his home state, writes the Washington Post.
The latest poll shows Trump is nearly 30 percentage points ahead of DeSantis among voters in Florida. As recently as March, the numbers were reversed: Then DeSantis led by more than 30 percentage points.
Several Republican politicians that the newspaper has spoken to believe that DeSantis focused on the wrong things, for example the covid debate and lifestyle issues.

Measurement: Trump sails away from the opposition despite two indictments
Former President Donald Trump has a crushing lead in public opinion with less than a month to go until the first Republican primary debate. This is shown by a survey from the New York Times.
Despite being impeached twice, Trump has 54 percent of support among Republican voters, which is nearly 40 percentage points more than Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Other competitors, including Nikki Haley and former Vice President Mike Pence, are only scraping together 2-3 percent.
Trump is by far the most popular candidate among virtually all Republican voter groups: men, women, younger, older, highly educated and less educated.

The IOC calls on Muslim member states to act against Sweden and Denmark
After Monday's meeting, Sweden and Denmark are condemned by the 57 Muslim countries in the cooperation organization OIC, reports TT.
The member countries are asked to act independently against "those countries where the Holy Koran is desecrated and burned", writes the organization in a statement.
The OIC has also decided to protest the Koran burnings in the European Commission and in the UN.

Billström in letter to OIC: Disrespectfully desecrate the Koran
The individuals and extremists who try to "sow a divide between Muslims and non-Muslims" should not be allowed to succeed. This is what Foreign Minister Tobias Billström writes to the Islamic Conference Organization OIC, which is discussing the Koran burnings on Monday. The text is referenced by Aftonbladet and SVT Nyheter, who have read the entire letter.
The Swedish government "in no way supports Islamophobic views", writes Billström in the letter. He explains the Swedish freedom of expression and freedom of demonstration, but also says that the government is reviewing the order law due to the Koran burnings. He writes:
"I completely understand that Muslims, in Sweden and in OIC countries around the world, are deeply offended by such actions. To desecrate the Koran, or any other holy scripture, is offensive and disrespectful.”
