"Hasty decision" - Italy wants to leave China's Silk Road
The fact that Italy joined China's initiative "one belt, one road", also called the new silk road, four years ago was a hasty decision. This is what Defense Minister Guido Crosetto says in an interview with Corriere della Sera.
Italy was the only Western country to join the initiative, writes Reuters. According to the minister, the new Silk Road has increased exports from China to Italy, but not the opposite.
- The critical point in the situation today is how we are to withdraw from the project without damaging relations with Beijing. China is a competitor, but also a cooperation partner, says Crosetto to the newspaper.

Leader: Populism is visible when the issues become more difficult
Invasive species, Italian populism and the support for Ukraine. There is a blissful mix in the subject choices on Swedish leading pages during Sunday.
The list of invasive species in Sweden can be made long. But trying to exterminate everyone is not the right way to go, writes Expressen's editorial board. Instead,
the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency should list which species
should be prioritized in the fight - and leave the signal crayfish out,
they write.
"Fishing for these lake animals is fun for young and old alike. Eating them a treat for even more.”
Criticism
of the way Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni handles the extreme
weather in the country exposes a problem for populism in general, writes
Sydsvenskan's editorial board: The politician who tries to solve
difficult questions with simple answers is eventually blindsided by
reality. That populism has never been a master at handling conflicts of goals is now noticeable "in a stormy Italy".
The West
must give Ukraine and President Volodymyr Zelenskyj what is required to
end the war now, argues guest columnist Nils Bildt on SvD's leader page.
"Military mistakes are spelled too late and too little," he writes.
