Data: Possible money crisis looms for Trump
Donald Trump's political campaign group Save America spent more than $40 million on legal fees in the first half of the year alone, sources told the Washington Post. The figure is expected to be published on Monday.
That's the single highest cost to Save America during Trump's presidential campaign — and more than the campaign's total raised in the second quarter.
- An extraordinary sum. Ultimately, it's up to donors to decide if that's how they want their money spent, says campaign finance expert Paul Seamus Ryan.
The New York Times has source information about the same amount. The newspaper has also been informed that Save America has asked for a refund of $60 million, money previously donated to another group. It's unclear how much has been repaid, but the move "signals a possible money crisis for Trump," according to the NYT.
Republican rival Chris Christie has previously called it "scandalous" that donations from ordinary Americans are being used to pay Trump's "personal legal expenses".
