Political situation in Chad

Moussa hopes for a better future after the election

27-year-old Moussa Ali Hissein voted in Chad's election on Sunday, the country's first in a decade, Reuters reports. In addition to the presidential election, local and regional elections are also being held.

- I really hope that the candidates keep their promises to young people. I really need a job, he tells the news agency.

The opposition has called for a boycott of the election as they believe that the military regime and President Mahamat Idriss Deb have already rigged the election in their own favor in advance.

Low voter turnout after opposition appeal in Chad

Chad is holding an election on Sunday where the population is given the opportunity to end three years of military rule, AFP reports.

But by mid-election day, only 38 percent of those eligible to vote had made it to the polls. This after the opposition called for a boycott and claimed that the election had already been decided in advance.

– People have stayed home after our call, it is an overwhelming majority, says opposition leader Succes Masara.

Mahamat Idriss Deby took power three years ago in a coup and the opposition believes that he is trying to cement his power through the election.
