The past year
The Prince on 2024: “Brutal – the worst year of my life”
British Crown Prince William has described 2024 as “brutal” and “the most difficult year of my life”. In an analysis, CNN’s Lauren Said-Moorhouse notes that both William’s father King Charles and his wife Kate were diagnosed with cancer just a few days apart and that Kate’s health was long surrounded by a “hurricane of sometimes laughable” conspiracy theories.
The anxiety in the royal family has also been exacerbated by the fact that the king’s brother Prince Andrew is linked to a suspected Chinese spy.
“This year, the royals probably don’t want to dwell on unnecessarily. They could not have imagined the challenges they had to take on,” writes Said-Moorhouse.
2025 is expected to be a more normal year. Both Kate and Charles are expected to participate in more official missions and trips.
The Independent's Laura Elston writes in an analysis in The Independent that Prince William hopes to handle his mission in a new way. "With a smaller r in the royal", as he is said to have put it.
Plane crash in Kazakhstan
Putin apologizes after plane crash in Kazakhstan
Russian President Vladimir Putin has spoken to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev after the plane crash that cost the lives of 38 people. In the conversation, Putin is said to have apologized for what he described as a "tragic incident" in Russian airspace, writes Reuters.
In a statement, the Kremlin states that the Azerbaijan Airlines plane attempted to land in Groznyj at the same time as Ukrainian drones were directed at Russia. The Russian government believes that Russian air defenses shot down the drones.
The plane crashed in Kazakhstan and the investigation has shown that "external physical and technical interference" was the cause. The United States, among others, has stated that Russia accidentally shot down the plane.

Xi Jinping's China
Hundreds of secret detention centers have been built across China
China has built or expanded over 200 specialized detention centers across the country, which are used, among other things, to interrogate people suspected of corruption. CNN has conducted a major review that shows that President Xi Jinping has "institutionalized" a crackdown on disloyal people and dissidents in recent years.
In the new detention centers, prisoners can be held for up to six months without meeting lawyers or family members.
A lawyer who has represented several people accused of corruption says that many testify to abuse, threats and forced confessions.
- Most give in to pressure and torture, says the anonymous lawyer.
Middle East crisis Gaza war
Personnel reportedly arrested during raid on Gaza hospital
Israeli forces raided the Kamal Adwan hospital in Gaza on Saturday, the Hamas-controlled Palestinian authorities said, according to Reuters.
The forces reportedly ordered dozens of patients and hundreds of others to evacuate the hospital. Dozens of staff, including the top manager, Hussam Abu Safiya, were reportedly arrested.
The World Health Organization (WHO) wrote on X that around 60 staff and 25 patients with life-threatening injuries were allowed to remain in the hospital and that the rest were moved.
“The systematic dismantling of the healthcare system in Gaza is a death sentence for tens of thousands of Palestinians in need of care,” the WHO wrote.
Israel has not commented on the reports.
