Musk in German newspaper: False to equate AFD with Hitler
Tech magnate Elon Musk has written an opinion piece in the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag expressing his support for the German far-right party AFD.
“To portray the AFD as right-wing extremists is patently false, given that Alice Weidel, the party leader, has a same-sex partner from Sri Lanka! Does that sound like Hitler to you? Please!” he writes.
Musk has recently supported several right-wing populist politicians, including Britain’s Nigel Farage and America’s Donald Trump. He also recently wrote on X that “only AFD can save Germany.”
Musk’s support for AFD comes ahead of the German re-election on February 23. Reuters writes that he justifies his involvement in German politics by saying that his company has made significant investments in Germany.
Opinion editor quits after Musk defends AfD
The debate editor at the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, Eva Marie Kogel, is resigning after tech billionaire Elon Musk was allowed to defend the German far-right AfD party in a debate article in the newspaper, Reuters reports.
In a post on X, she writes that she has always liked her job, but that she submitted her resignation on Friday.
Editors-in-chief Jan Philipp Burgard and Ulf Poschardt, however, defend the publication.
– Democracy and journalism thrive on freedom of expression. This includes dealing with polarizing positions and classifying them journalistically, they tell Reuters.
Burgard published a comment under Musk's debate article in which he writes that Musk is right that the AfD is not a far-right party, but wrong when he claims that only the AfD can save Germany.
