Prime Minister: “Serious and tragic incident”

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre says it is a “very serious and tragic incident” that has occurred in Jæren outside Stavanger. A young police officer was shot dead when a shooting occurred in connection with an operation. Another police officer was injured.

“My thoughts go out to the relatives and survivors,” says the Prime Minister, according to the Norwegian VG.

The last time a police officer was killed in the line of duty in Norway was in 2010 and before that in 2004. The Prime Minister says the incident will be investigated with the help of Kripos, the Norwegian national unit for combating organized and other serious crime.

A suspected perpetrator in his 40s also died in the shooting.

Police officer in his 20s shot dead: "Deep sorrow"

The police officer who died in the shooting in connection with an operation in southern Norway last night was in his 20s, the police said in a statement. Both he and the perpetrator were taken to hospital during the night. Both later died of their injuries.

- It is with deep sadness that we have received the news of the death, says Police Chief Hans Vik.

He states that the police are now working to investigate the incident and to take care of the personnel.

Justice Minister Emilie Enger Mehl has also commented on the incident.

- Our thoughts now go to the victims and their relatives, she says in a statement.

Two dead in shooting during operation in Norway

Two people, including a police officer, have died after a shooting in connection with an operation in Jæren in southern Norway during the night towards Saturday. This is reported by Norwegian media.

Police officers went to the scene shortly after 1 a.m. after receiving a report of a possible threat. It was when the patrols stopped a suspicious car at 1:30 a.m. that shots were fired from the vehicle.

“A gunfight then broke out between the suspect and the police. The perpetrator and two police officers were hit by gunfire,” police officer Victor Fenne-Jensen told Norwegian newspaper VG.

Both the police officer and the suspect died from their injuries.
