Less dialogue between China and the US when Trump takes over

Talks between representatives of the US government and China are likely to be much fewer when Donald Trump is sworn in as the new president, reports the Wall Street Journal.

The newspaper writes that American and Chinese politicians and officials from the Treasury departments have met about every other month in recent years. Experts and analysts do not expect Trump to keep the meetings alive.

China has tried to get in touch with Trump's inner circle several times before the change of power, without success, according to the newspaper.

A source says that Trump's staff has suggested that they want to hold talks with President Xi Jinping's closest circle, rather than through the usual diplomatic channels. China is said to be unwilling to agree to the proposal.

Work Visas Divide Donald Trump's Allies

Trump's most loyal power players have fallen out over immigration, US media report.

Entrepreneurs Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy want to bring in more well-educated workers for the tech industry, while important allies and a large part of voters on the nationalist right wing want to stop all immigration, CNN and CBS, among others, write.

The debate began when far-right profile Laura Loomer criticized Trump's appointment of Sriram Krishnan, who is in favor of labor immigration, as an AI advisor.

"This is not America First," she wrote on X. A fierce debate has raged mainly on social media all week, according to the AP.

"The lack of skilled engineers is the most important limiting factor in Silicon Valley," Elon Musk wrote on X.

Trump himself has not commented on the issue.

Florida summit after US tariff threat

The Canadian government has met with Donald Trump's trade secretary-designate Howard Lutnick at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, AFP reports. Newly appointed finance minister Dominic Leblanc and foreign minister Melanie Joly were there for "positive and productive" talks.

Trump has previously threatened to impose 25 percent tariffs on all imports from Canada and said they will remain in place until Canada tackles migrants and fentanyl crossing the border.

The Canadian ministers presented the measures in the country's "border plan," according to the finance minister's press secretary. The US representatives promised to pass on the information to Trump.
