Violent mutiny 15 years ago to be reinvestigated
The Bangladesh government has appointed a commission to investigate the violent mutiny of 2009, which the Dhaka Tribune newspaper describes as one of the darkest chapters in the country's history.
74 people died, including 57 in the army, when a paramilitary group took up arms to overthrow the government. Thousands of soldiers supported the uprising, but the mutiny ended with the army crushing the rebels. A few years later, hundreds of people were sentenced to death and life imprisonment, writes AFP.
A previous investigation was carried out when former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ruled the country, but it was not well received by relatives of the mutiny victims. Many accused Hasina of orchestrating the uprising to strengthen her own power. Since she was forced into exile in August, relatives have demanded that the investigation be reopened.
New investigation in Bangladesh is likely to anger neighboring India
The fact that a special commission has been appointed to investigate the mutiny in Bangladesh 15 years ago is expected to anger neighboring India, writes AFP.
After the armed rebellion was crushed, the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was accused of having orchestrated the whole thing, with the support of her close allies in India. Last autumn, she was overthrown after 15 straight years in power – and now the new government wants to investigate the mutiny again.
– We aim to determine whether any foreign actor was involved in the massacre, as allegations of a national and international conspiracy have been made, says the chairman of the commission, Fazlur Rahman.
India has not yet commented on the new investigation.
