Political situation in Kenya

Shared AI images of the president – disappeared without a trace

Four people who shared AI-generated images of President William Ruto on social media are among the 82 people who are said to have disappeared without a trace in Kenya since last summer, reports the AP.

Human rights groups and members of the opposition have pointed to the police and intelligence services as responsible for the alleged kidnappings.

The government has denied having anything to do with the matter, and William Ruto said in a statement on Saturday that he promises that the government will put an end to the disappearances so that “young people can live in peace”.

Protesters accuse police of kidnappings

Protesters in Kenya accuse the police and intelligence services of kidnapping opposition figures, reports Reuters.

According to the news agency, human rights groups also state that the number of abductions has increased sharply, and point to the authorities as responsible.

The abductions are said to be a response to the anti-government protests that began this summer.

Police have fired tear gas at protesters throughout the day. Government spokespeople have denied involvement in the disappearances.
