Idil Almost Died at Sea – Now She Wants to Try to Reach Europe Again
In December, 28-year-old Idil Abdullahi Goley was deported back to Somalia from Madagascar. She was rescued there after 13 days of hunger and thirst adrift at sea while trying to reach the French department of Mayotte, she tells the AP.
The people smugglers she and the others had paid 65,000 kronor each had taken the boat's engines and fled. She felt helpless when she failed to save the life of a small child.
"We had to throw her body into the sea so it wouldn't start to rot while people continued to die around us," she tells the AP.
Idil Abdullahi Goley still has nightmares about the events. Yet, like thousands of desperate Somalis every year, she plans to say goodbye to her three children once again and try again.
Record number of migrants drowned on the way to Europe
At least 10,457 people died or went missing while trying to cross the Mediterranean to Spain in 2024. The figure is the highest since the voluntary organization Caminando Fronteras began counting in 2007, reports AFP.
Since then, more have died every year. The increase is 58 percent compared to last year.
“So many deaths in a single year is an unacceptable tragedy,” says the organization’s founder Helena Maleno.
Caminando Fronteras collects data from emergency lines for boats in distress, families of missing migrants and public rescue statistics.
