Russian influence in Africa

Russia signs nuclear energy deal with Niger

Russia on Monday deepened its influence in West Africa by signing a civil nuclear energy deal with Niger's military junta, reports the independent Moscow Times.

The deal includes the construction of nuclear power plants and an upgrade of the country's energy infrastructure.

"Our goal is not just to extract uranium. We must create a whole system of peaceful nuclear energy in Niger," said Russian Energy Minister Sergei Tsivilev, who led Moscow's delegation.

Since the military junta ousted the democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum and took power in 2023, they have strengthened ties with Russia.

ISW: US and Russia in power struggle in West Africa

Russia and the US are competing for influence in West Africa, the ISW think tank writes in a report.

While the US is trying to strengthen its ties with the states in the central Sahel region and in the coastal area, the Russians are focusing on the coastal countries, especially Togo.

On July 22, Russia and Togo signed a military cooperation agreement. It includes joint military exercises, the exchange of weapons and equipment, and a joint fight against pirates. The Kremlin may also provide political support to President Faure Gnassingbé.

Russia has also sought closer ties with Benin and São Tomé and Príncipe, writes ISW.
