The IUD scandal — it's relevant
- Between 1966 and 1970, at least 4,500 Greenlandic girls and women had IUDs inserted by Danish authorities to reduce the birth rate.
- Many of those affected were as young as 13 years old and received IUDs without their consent or information to their parents, according to several testimonies.
- The campaign continued for decades after 1970 and the number of unreported cases is believed to be large, with long-term physical and psychological consequences for many women.
- 143 Greenlandic women have sued the Danish state and are demanding compensation for abuses of their human rights, while 15 women have received compensation from the Greenlandic government.
- A Danish investigation into the IUD campaign is ongoing and is expected to present its report in September this year.
