Task: Military plans have been discussed for weeks

The White House has been sketching out plans for a military operation in Chicago for several weeks, sources told the Washington Post. Among several options being considered are plans to deploy thousands of National Guard troops to the city as early as next month.

Donald Trump has recently said that Chicago is next in line in the president's attempt to curb crime in several cities through federal efforts. All of the cities Trump has singled out have Democratic governments.

Trump's efforts — it's relevant

• Donald Trump took federal control of the Washington DC police and called in 800 National Guard troops to fight crime in the city.
• The FBI and other federal agencies were deployed to patrol the streets, despite protests from the local government.
• Mayor Muriel Bowser and several residents protested the measures, calling them a threat to the city's autonomy.
• In the first few days, 23 people were arrested and Trump announced plans to extend federal control and hinted at similar efforts in Chicago and New York.
• Trump's critics have said the measures are excessive and politically motivated.
