The police confirm that at least ten people have been killed in connection with a mass shooting in Los Angeles in the USA, according to AP.  

 

The police have come out and said that they suspect that an Asian man is behind the shooting. 

 

The shooting will have occurred in connection with the celebration of the Chinese New Year, according to international media.  

 

The shooting has a place next to Monterey Park, approximately 11 kilometers from central Los Angeles, shortly after 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, local time, reports BNO News.

According to initial information, around 16 people were injured in the trade.  

 

During a press conference a few hours after the shooting, police confirmed that at least 10 people were killed in the shooting, five women and five men, according to Los Angeles Police Chief Robert Luna.  

 

A further ten people are being treated in hospital.  

 

- It's everything from critical to stable cases, says Andrew Meyer, head of the Los Angeles police homicide squad.

He says that the act of violence must have taken place in a dance hall. 

 

The incident occurred at the same time as the annual festival celebration of the Chinese New Year, which has now been canceled as a result of the mass shooting.  

 

The Los Angeles Daily News writes that thousands of people must have been in the area to participate in the celebration, when the shooting occurred.  

 

Details of a second crime scene 

 

During a press conference on Sunday morning, local time, the police say that there was also an incident after the shooting, in the nearby stand Alhamra. 

 

- We believe that it is an event that may be connected to the shooting where a suspicious Asian man entered a dance hall, armed with a rifle, and someone then took the weapon from him. The person then ran from the scene, says Robert Luna.  

 

The police had therefore seized a rifle, but are investigating the connection to the mass shooting.

Thought it was fireworks 

 

Witnesses must have initially thought that the explosions they heard were fireworks, writes BNO News.  

In the area there are also many Asian companies and according to witness statements, more of the victims were found indoors in one of the buildings.  

 

Monterey Park has a circulation of 60,000 to visit and store in Asian residents.  

 

Typically, the annual festival draws around 100,000 visitors, according to the BBC.  

 

Shooter on the loose 

 

According to the police in Los Angeles, it is about a suspected perpetrator. 

 

- An Asian man between 30 and 60 years old, says Robert Luna during the press conference, but at the same time says that the police intend to return when they have a more precise description.  

 

According to witness statements, the shooter had a semi-automatic rifle. 

 

The police will not comment on any more details.  

 

There is currently no information on arrests.
