Spring is in the air – at least if you look at the European weather map.
Several countries broke new heat records on the first day of the year.
The Swiss alpine town of Delémont set a new high of over 20 degrees.
It is unusually mild weather in large parts of Europe right now. On the first day of the year, new warm records for the season were broken in seven countries.
- It has been a very mild start to the year, says Mikael Luhr at the weather service Klart.se.
For the Swedish part, no record highs have been reached, but in Kristianstad the temperature reached a spring-like 11.5 degrees.

15 degrees warmer than normal
In the Swiss alpine town of Delémont, 20.2 degrees were measured. It is the warmest January temperature ever measured on the northern side of the Alps, according to TT. The normal for the season is around four degrees.
In several places in Europe, it is over 15 degrees warmer than the average for the season.
In the Czech town of Javornik, the thermometer showed 19.6 degrees last January. In Poland, a 24-year-old record was broken when residents of Korbielow were treated to 19-degree heat, while residents of the Dutch city of Eindhoven greeted the new year with 16.9 degrees.
In Åbed, Denmark, the previous record from 1874 was broken with a temperature of 12.6 degrees.
Mediterranean air flows up
According to Mikael Luhr, the cause is an unusually strong jet stream that has brought up south-westerly winds from Spain and the north-west corner of Africa, which has brought up mild air over Central Europe and parts of northern Europe.

The mild weather makes it ideal for winter sports and in several places in the Alps the temperatures have been around 20 degrees.
When the ski competition Tour de ski began in the Swiss Val Müstair, the organizers were forced to shorten a loop due to an acute lack of snow, something that Sportbladets Anna Rydén reported on the spot.
Before the third stage in German Obertsdorf on January 3, it is 16 degrees – as hot as it is on the Spanish tourist island of Mallorca.
The snow found in the German resort is concentrated on the tracks. All around are green fields and muddy mud.
- It's crazy that it's January 2, you think it's April and the spring race. We have to hope they get the track together, says Swedish skier Maja Dahlqvist to Sportbladet.

Cool on entry
But the heat doesn't last long. Temperatures are expected to drop already in the coming days.
- After that heat wave, it looks like it will be relatively cold in large parts of Europe during the second half of January, says Mikael Luhr.
For the Swedish part, a winter atmosphere with both sub-zero temperatures and snow is approaching towards the latter part of the week.
- Possibly there will be minus degrees in almost the entire country, says Mikael Luhr.
