Snipers shoot people dead on the street and in their homes
The UN urges authorities in Haiti to address the security situation in the country immediately, writes AFP. The call comes after reports of gangland snipers terrorizing residents of the capital, Port-au-Prince. Since the turn of the year alone, more than 500 people have been killed.
- Most of the victims were killed or injured by snipers who allegedly randomly shot people in their homes or on the streets, says UN spokesperson Marta Hurtado.
Haiti has fallen into a deepening political and economic crisis since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021.

Gang violence has claimed 531 victims in Haiti – this year alone
531 people have been killed so far this year in gang violence in Haiti, according to the UN according to AFP. The organization expresses concern that the situation may be about to run amok.
In addition to the many people killed, 300 have been injured and 277 kidnapped. Most of the incidents occurred in the capital, Port-au-Prince.
The island nation in the Caribbean has suffered a deep political and economic crisis since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021. Gang criminals have now taken control of half of the country's territory.
