Saudi minister to Syria - first time since 2011
Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan is visiting Syria today, Reuters reports. It is the first time that a representative of the country has visited Syria since the war broke out in 2011.
The visit is described as an important step to break Syria's isolation in the region and comes after the country's foreign minister Faisal Mekdad visited Saudi Arabia last week, writes AFP.
Like several countries in the Arab world, Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic cooperation with Syria when the civil war broke out. But in late March, the countries agreed to resume diplomatic relations and reopen their respective embassies
Spy-accused WSJ reporter appears in court
The spy-accused and detained Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich appeared in court in Russia today, news agencies report.
Gershkovich, who risks 20 years in prison, is said to have said nothing in court, writes Reuters.
The arrest of Gershkovich is seen by many as another example of how vulnerable journalists are in Russia.
